The fatal enemy of the Volturi, led by Stefan and Vladimir, are gathering once more to take on the ruling power; Aro. The Romanians are nestled deep in their castle in Romania, in the mountains, unseen by the Volturi. They are small, but growing: they have a power Aro could only dream about.
His name is Aaron McCauley. They call him The Oathkeeper. He has the ability to bind a person to what they say, to swear them into bondage, servitude, and silence. Any attempt to escape that bondage will make the swearer mortally ill.
The two rulers have sent out tendrils - guards with gifts like charisma and intelligence, to find those they seek, to understand their powers, and to collect information. These spies also have one other task: to find others to bind into service for their masters.
The Volturi defeated them once. They will not get a second chance to do so. When they are ready - and only then, they will attack.
As the new year dawned, the world ended. While fireworks exploded in the sky, fire rocked the underworld below, as the impossible became possible. The Romanians attacked, the soldiers sworn into unwilling obedience hacking and burning those once revered as the lawkeepers with a fervor, releasing the fury the ancient leaders had allowed to smolder for millenia. Fire scorched the ancient halls, ferreting out even the most secretive of the Volturi. On that day, for the first time in history, the Volturi were defeated.
Marcus was no more than ash, and Aro had scattered with the rest of the Volturi that had been hidden away in the fortress. The day would have gone to the Romanians, but for one thing: the Guard still lived.
The bomb, you see, went off too early. The Romanians, after all, weren't planning on Caius's pets making a side stop. By the time the plane blew, the Guard had safely disembarked. All too soon, they knew the truth: they were without a home, missing a leader, and in danger of being the last of their coven. For a time, the Volturi were lost, but they have begun to piece themselves back together, searching the globe for one another with Demetri and thousands of years of connections, and hiding from the Romanians.
The new rulers, after all, could hardly allow this threat to live on. They have deployed all their resources, set to track down and eliminate or enlist every last member of the enemy coven. They have even done the unimaginable: contacted the Children of the Moon. Through secret contacts, and whispers, they're spreading the word: any member of the Volturi brought to Rocca Nova's doorstep is worth their weight in gold, dead or alive.
And you would deliver them, wouldn't you? You certainly wouldn't want to anger your new rulers, right?
